Ryan Mallett, a former NFL quarterback for Arkansas, dies at 35 after allegedly drowning.

Ryan Mallett, a former quarterback for the NFL and the University of Arkansas, perished in what appears to be a drowning accident near Florida's Gulf Coast. He was 35 at the time.

According to a report published on Tuesday by Arkansas' Deltaplex News, Mallett was taken from a Destin, Florida, beach where the event occurred to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Mallett worked for the White Hall School District, and representatives there verified his demise. White Hall High School's head football coach was Mallett.

The statement adds, "We share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett with great sadness." "Coach Mallett was a well-liked educator and coach. Please remember in your prayers his family, team, players, coaches, and the staff of the White Hall School District.

Tuesday afternoon, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office released a statement confirming the cause of Mallett's death.

The statement reads, "A tourist died in an apparent drowning offshore of Gulf Shore Drive in Destin." "A man apparently perished while a group of people was struggling offshore. When the lifeguards discovered him and hauled him out, he was not breathing. Sadly, efforts to save lives were unsuccessful.

Following notification of Mallett's next of kin, the OCSO later determined the guy described as "a tourist" was in fact 

Mallett. Mallett's passing is reported amid 11 recent deaths along the Gulf Coast that have been blamed on rip currents.

Prior to transferring to Arkansas, where he played for two seasons, Mallett played collegiate football as a freshman at Michigan. The New England Patriots selected him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draught. He participated in seven NFL seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and Patriots.

One of the greatest high school quarterbacks to ever compete in his home state was Mallett, who was born in Batesville, Arkansas. He made 11 appearances as Chad Henne's backup as a freshman after committing to play at Michigan. After Michigan coach Lloyd Carr retired, he switched to Arkansas and played as a sophomore and junior for the Razorbacks. After his junior year, he announced his intention to enter the NFL draught.

After a limited role as Tom Brady's backup, Mallett was traded by the Patriots to the Texans in 2014. Prior to being released midseason in 2015 by Texas, he had nine appearances, including six starts. Later, he joined the Ravens, where he played through the 2017 season in eight games, starting two of them.

In 2022, he became the football coach of White Hall.
