American actress and filmmaker Angelina Jolie was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 4, 1975. She is well-known for her sex appeal, edginess, and humanitarian endeavors. Her supporting performance as a mentally ill patient in Girl, Interrupted (1999) earned her an Academy Award.




Early Years

Jolie, the actor Jon Voight's daughter, was born and raised primarily in New York, moving to Los Angeles when she was eleven years old. After spending two years at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, she enrolled in Beverly Hills High School. Later on, she attended New York University to study drama. She acted in plays, did modeling work, and had appearances in music videos.


Roles in films

Jolie's first significant film appearance was in the 1995 picture Hackers, where she also met British actor Jonny Lee Miller, who she married in 1996 and later divorced in 1999. She played Alexander the Great's mother in Oliver Stone's 2004 film Alexander. She also acted in the science fiction thriller Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which was set in 1930s New York City, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. While filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Jolie played an assassin posing as a typical housewife. The movie was a box office blockbuster, and while filming it, Jolie met Brad Pitt, who would go on to become her partner.




In Robert De Niro's 2006 film The Good Shepherd, she portrayed the resentful spouse of a former CIA agent played by Matt Damon. Jolie's portrayal of Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart (2007) won her praise from critics. Later on, she played Maleficent's main antagonist (2014). The live-action movie made an effort to humanize the malevolent fairy from Disney's 1959 animated masterpiece Sleeping Beauty. Later, in 2019, Jolie starred in the follow-up. She played the mother of Peter Pan and Alice (from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland), two fictional characters created by J.M. Barrie and Lewis Carroll, respectively, in the fantasy-adventure film Come Away in 2020.


In the 2021 action-thriller film Those Who Wish Me Dead, Jolie played a firefighter defending a small child who was being pursued by assassins. She made her screen debut as the immortal warrior Thena in the Marvel Cinematic Universe action film Eternals, which was released in 2021. Jolie also did voice work for a number of movies, such as The One and Only Ivan (2020) and the animated Kung Fu Panda (2008) and its sequels (2011 and 2016).


Leading

In the Land of Blood and Honey, a tragic love story set during the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s, marked Jolie's directorial and scripting debut in 2011.
