How can I live off of my laptop and earn $2,000 a week? |
A foolish notion that I found effective was consulting a programmer.
A five-day workweek of $2000 equates to $400 each day, or $50 per hour. That's not a huge salary for a freelance programmer. All you need is your laptop.
It's also not necessary to be an exceptionally talented coder. You should be good if you choose some reasonably intermediate JavaScript knowledge. However, communication skills are crucial in this field of employment: you need to be able to comprehend the client's requirements, keep them informed, and collaborate with them to find the best answer. That makes up half of the labor; the remaining 50% is coding and making it function.
I really can't stress this enough. You don't need to be an experienced coder; moderate knowledge will do. You'll benefit from effective communication far more than superior programming skills. This is also what will set you apart from the competitors.
To find work, use one of the freelance websites. (I utilized Upwork's predecessors; I'm not sure how well it functions these days.) You will have to start at much lower prices (let's say $15–$25/hour for your initial jobs) if you have no prior credentials.
Five to ten percent of bids will go your way if you take the time to write excellent ones in the beginning and demonstrate that working with you would be enjoyable. Start modest and easy; your initial endeavors need to be successful. However, if you communicate well, your ratings will soar and you'll undoubtedly advance.
You probably won't be able to fully book your schedule as a freelancer, especially if you don't want to overbook yourself at other times.
Let's aim for $75 per hour and estimate a 2/3 utilization just to be cautious. Initially, you will dedicate a significant portion of the remaining one-third to job searching, bidding, and administrative tasks; however, as you establish your freelance profession, several repeat clients will come to you directly. Your hourly rate increase can then be accelerated by using the extra time to study and provide more references for your own projects.
Just make sure the client succeeds. Speak with them, ascertain their needs despite their denials, create and provide what they require, and keep them informed. Even if things could go awry from time to time, you will be fine.
How quickly can you arrive? Work on your programming abilities for two to three months, doing tutorials and little projects first, then one somewhat larger project and learning a framework while working on that project. This will depend on how quickly you pick things up and whether your mind is suitable for this kind of work.
Take care of that nagging issue while working on the project. You can start freelancing right away if you open source the project to use as a reference. It should be possible to charge $50 per hour after about 6–9 months of freelancing without any further certifications. It will take an additional 3–6 months to reach $75. Congratulations! Your monthly income is now $2000!
