ESTIMATING THE ORIGINAL 53-MAN COMMANDERS ROSTER FOR 2024
ESTIMATING THE ORIGINAL 53-MAN COMMANDERS ROSTER FOR 2024 |
Be advised: The 53-man roster that the Washington Commanders initially selected will most likely alter greatly from the roster that will use during their first week of play. Washington is ranked second in the waiver claim order, meaning General Manager Adam Peters will likely rearrange certain position groupings by adding players released by other teams soon after he sets this roster (deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. Eastern Time). Even with the acquisition of Cade York, consider positions on the offensive and defensive lines, at wide receiver, cornerback, and, yes, kicker. No group is off-limits, and in his first seven months in Washington, Peters has demonstrated his lack of fear of significant change.
Recall that during the preseason, the Commanders were able to observe players from the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets up close. It is also wise to keep an eye on any waived player who worked under Coach Dan Quinn in Dallas or Peters in San Francisco.
Additionally, Washington might open the season with a few players on injured reserve. After the first 53 players are selected, up to 10 players who were placed on injured reserve (IR) may return in as few as four games; at that time, they will not be counted against the roster cap.
But in the meanwhile, before Sunday night's final preseason game against the Patriots, here's your best chance to guess Washington's starting 53:
Offense (25)
Follow Sports: Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, Sam Hartman, Quarterback (3)
Cut: Trace McSorley and Jeff Driskel
Quinn has lauded the quarterback group as a whole, and Daniels is set. However, backup locations are never safe, not even in this situation. There is a good case to maintain Driskel instead of Hartman. The fact that the Commanders gave Hartman a sizable signing bonus indicates their interest in him, even though it wouldn't stop them from moving on. Additionally, it makes sense to keep him over the veteran if they still think well of him and think he will be claimed off waivers.
Cut: Austin Jones, Michael Wiley, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and Kazmeir Allen
During camp, Allen moved to running back and saw a lot of action as a returner. Should he
else touches down on IR.
Broad receiver (6)
Dyami Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus, Luke McCaffrey, Jamison Crowder, Terry McLaurin, and Brycen Tremayne
Cut: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Davion Davis, Martavis Bryant, Byron Pringle, Mitchell Tinsley
The biggest transaction in training camp may not have been at wide receiver, but it was the trade of Jahan Dotson. Specifically, this group is subject to change based on who becomes available off waivers. And those that are first cut are excellent choices for the practice squad.
Cut: David Nwaogwugwu, Braeden Daniels, Armani Taylor-Prioleau, Ricky Stromberg, Julian Good-Jones, Trent Scott, and Tom Cameron
Due to a pectoral injury, Coleman was unable to play throughout the preseason; therefore, Lucas might start the first game. What is more The depth in every position is concerning. Though they were cut by other teams, Paul and Deiter Washington might not find starter-caliber players on the wire, these individuals might be more suited for this offense and end up being valuable depth players.
(4) Tight end
Colson, John Bates, Ben Sinnott, and Zach Ertz Yankoff
Cole Turner was cut.
Quinn has complimented the Commanders' tight end corps for its depth and reliability. However, Washington doesn't have many larger pass catchers, so if he makes a surprise cut somewhere, there might be enough interest to keep him in the mix. But for the time being, Yankoff's flexibility and play power should make him the favorite over Cole Turner, a 2022 fifth-round pick.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Jamin Davis, K.J. Henry, Dorance Armstrong, and Clelin Ferrell
Cut: Justin Hollins, Jalen Harris, Andre Jones, and Efe Obada
It appears that Davis has a lot better future on the edge than off the ball. He intends to stay. After the initial 53 are determined, Efe Obada, who began training camp on the physically unable to perform list, may be moved to the reserve/PUP list. If healthy, he would be able to make a comeback after four games and would not be counted toward the active roster cap. However, doing so would mean putting another defensive end on waivers and taking the chance that an other team would take him.
Dfour defensive tackles: John Ridgeway III, Daron Payne, Johnny Newton, and Jonathan Allen
Cut: Benning Potoa'e, Taylor Stallworth, Norell Pollard, Haggai Ndubuisi, and Phidarian Mathis
Newton hasn't participated in the preseason due to a soft-tissue injury. Due to cuts, the team may decide to put him on short-term injured reserve (IR) in order to give him an additional six weeks to heal.
Buddy Wagner, Frankie Luvu, Dante Fowler Jr., Jordan Magee, Anthony Pittman, and Dominique Hampton are the six linebackers.
Cut: Chapelle, Mykal Walker After this 53 is determined, Russell Magee, who had meniscus surgery during camp, is another player who could be placed on injured reserve. Originally selected as a safety, Quinn and his staff switched Hampton to linebacker.
Security (5)
Quan Martin, Tyler Owens, Jeremy Reaves, Percy Butler, and Jeremy Chinn
Sheldrick Redwine and Kendell Brooks are cut.
This is a challenging group. Owens earned a spot because he showed promise in camp, especially on special teams. Butler or Forrest may have the final say if Peters and Quinn opt to stick with just five safeties at first. Washington has deployed Butler in more ways than one, including as the deep safety, in the box on subpackages, in the slot, and outside at the corner, therefore Butler wins out. Forrest's injury kept him out of the first preseason game. In the second Miami preseason game, he played as a slot corner and free safety.
Cornerback (5)
Noah Igbinoghene, Michael Davis, Emmanuel Forbes, Mike Sainristil, and Benjamin St-Juste
Cut: Nick Whiteside III, James Pierre, A.J. Woods, Chigozie Anusiem, Tariq Castro-Fields, Kyu Blu Kelly, and Nick Whiteside III
Sainristil is here, along with everyone else. Although the rookie is rapidly emerging as one of their best defenders, there is still much need for improvement from Washington's other corners. Here, the group should search the wire for assistance.

Bettors/holders (1)
Kicker Tress Way (1)
Tyler Ott, Cade York, Long Snapper (1)
York was acquired by the Commanders through trade, although they are only required to give up a seventh-round pick if he plays in at least two games. Therefore, following cuts, may the Commanders see who becomes available?
